Small Kitchen, Summer Cooking Blues

July 15, 2010

As much as I love going out to eat, I like making things at home more. You get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and there’s no big bill at the end.I have to admit that my boyfriend does the bulk of the cooking (I get saddled with the cleanup) but I do get to take my turn to make thing occasionally. We have to take turns because we are stuck with a super small kitchen and it’s pretty much impossible to work in there together. It’s probably my least favorite thing about where we live currently. There is absolutely zero counter space, though we got lucky and the previous resident left behind a cart that provides a small but serviceable place to prepare food and store essentials.

We’ve had to come up with some creative storage solutions as well, and many things require short little me to get a stool to reach. The number one thing I will be looking for when we decide to move will be a bigger kitchen. Preferably one with a dishwasher.

Having a small kitchen can make cooking difficult but summer weather and no air conditioning can make cooking downright undesirable. There are have more than a few times over the past 90 degree+ days when we’ve just opted to go out rather than make it any hotter in here by trying to cook something. Are there any ways you cope with having a small or super hot kitchen during the summer? It’s been kind of a bummer for two people who really like to cook at home.

Oh well, there’s always the next place!

We don’t have a grill! Or a porch for one. Otherwise that would totally work for me.
