I enjoy sewing, but it isn’t really something that I have a lot of natural skill at doing. In fact, it’s pretty usual for me to have to sew something two, three or four times before I figure out how not to screw it up. The seam ripper is my best friend, unfortunately.
You would think that sewing something as basic as a zippered pillow wouldn’t be that complicated, but for the sewing impaired it really is. I managed to do idiotic things like not match up edges and to sew the zipper at the top rather than the bottom. Somehow, after three or four times the amount of time it should have taken, I finished these. I’m in no hurry to take on another pillow project, to be sure.
Pillow number one! The fabric is a Japanese print and was stupidly expensive ($20 a yard! That’s why the back is a different fabric). I really like it though! Great print and colors.
Here’s a close-up of the owl on one of the pillows. It’s obvious now why I chose this fabric.
I had no idea how to sew a zipper into a pillow when I started, but this tutorial from Design Sponge was amazingly helpful. Many of the mistakes I made were from failing to read the instructions carefully. Ooops.

Awesome article.
I have found that making throw pillow is easier when I used the envelope method. It makes them so easy to take then off and clean. Some of them I might spray with scotchgard first to help keep stains at bay. I even bought fabric at a thrift store and made a huge dog bed/pillow for my daughters 2 dogs using this method. Easy Peasy!
